American Legislative Exchange Council

Documented Investigations has revealed that 15 Colorado legislators, including Senator Randy Baumgardner and Representative Bob Rankin, are members of the American Legislative Exchange Council. ALEC is a nonprofit organization of state legislators and private sector representatives who draft and share state-level legislation. Nonpartisan watchdog group Colorado Common Cause wants constituents to urge their elected officials to leave ALEC. KDNK’s Raleigh Burleigh spoke with advocacy and media manager Caroline Fry to find out why.

Last week President Trump dissolved his Election Integrity Commission with an executive order. As Elizabeth Steele, Election Director for Colorado Common Cause, tells KDNK’s Raleigh Burleigh, the commission’s legacy may go forward under the Department of Homeland Security.

Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams stated that more than 1,400 of the 5,000 that deregistered following his announcement that Colorado would give requested information to the commission have since re-registered.

This week, Denver hosts the 44th annual meeting for the American Legislative Exchange Council, a corporate-sponsored lobbying group abbreviated as ALEC. Nonprofit organization Common Cause released a report earlier this week exemplifying ALEC’s influence in Colorado politics throughout these past few decades. KDNK’s Raleigh Burleigh spoke with Caroline Fry, Advocacy and Media Director for Colorado Common Cause.
