Community Calendar for October 31st

Here’s your community calendar for Monday, October 31st, underwritten by the Mount Sopris Rotary Club. Rotary is holding a raffle, with all proceeds going to dental care for local children in need. Prizes include a 3-day trip to Denver with hotel and Broncos tickets. For more information, contact Pat Pier at 987-3265.

  • The New Castle Gardens Pumpkin Patch on Peach Valley Road is open from 10AM to 4:30 with the Pumpkin-ator, pumpkin bowling, pumpkin basketball and hillbilly golf.

  • The pumpkin patch at Osage Gardens, on River Frontage Road between New Castle and Silt, is open from 11AM to 6PM. Kids activities include a hay maze and hay mountain.

  • The Basalt Library hosts a haunted library scavenger hunt for kids at 4.

  • At 5:30, Explore Booksellers in Aspen hosts Trick or Treat Spooky Storytime. Hear a reading of the manager's favorite kids book, Bunnicula. Plus a guest appearance by Terra the Bunny.

  • At 6, the 5th Annual Boy Scouts Haunted House Fundraiser wraps up at West Glenwood mall.

  • From 6 to 8 at the Glenwood Springs Library, “Your Story, Your Life” is a workshop for writing your personal history, one story at a time, facilitated by genealogist/historian Shelly Merriam.

  • Heather’s in Basalt hosts a Halloween Costume Party with music from Smokin Joe & Zoe at 7.

  • And there’ll be a funky party going down at Belly Up Aspen at 9. Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe plays Prince’s Dirty Mind featuring Angelo Moore of Fishbone, with DJ Naka G opening.

Looking ahead…

  • Tomorrow, Tuesday morning from 10AM to noon, Joanne Stamp, program manager with the Center for Independence, leads a workshop for seniors called Empowered to be Independent, at Sunnyside Retirement Center in Glenwood Springs. This event is for people with vision, hearing and memory challenges, as well as their families and caregivers, and will cover helpful technology, tools, tricks and financial resources. Gavin became one of the youngest station managers in public radio on February 1, 2017. He is a writer and producer with a passion for community media. Prior to starting at KDNK as news director in 2016, Gavin worked for national radio programs Alternative Radio with David Barsamian and Nonprofit Radio with Tony Martignetti along with local stations KGNU Boulder, KYRS Spokane, KRBX Boise, KAOS Olympia, and Air America Radio affiliate KPTK Seattle. His nonprofit management experience includes Open Media Foundation, where he led a government transparency team, and Common Frequency, where his policy advocacy supported dozens of noncommercial radio startups. Boulder Weekly, Raw Story, Austin American-Statesman, Boise Weekly, and The Sopris Sun have published his reporting. His TV credits include directing teams at Colorado Channel, crewing for Democracy Now!, and hosting on Free Speech TV. He graduated from the Evergreen State College in 2008 with a BA in media production and community organizing.
