Community Calendar for November 12th

Here’s your community calendar for Saturday, November 12th, underwritten by the Mount Sopris Rotary Club. Rotary is holding a raffle, with all proceeds going to dental care for local children in need. Prizes include a 3-day trip to Denver with hotel and Broncos tickets.   • RJ Paddywack’s in El Jebel hosts the 4th annual Bird Seed Benefit for Roaring Fork Audobon all day today and tomorrow.

  • The Carbondale Community Oven invites everyone to bring bread or pizza to the next Bread Bake today, behind the Third Street Center. Bread goes into the oven at 1 pm. Pro tip: Bringing butter, jams or other bread toppings is never a bad idea.

  • The Blue Sage Center for the Arts in Paonia hosts their annual Grand Vin Tasting and Auction from 3 to 5 featuring nine different wineries plus local cider.

  • The film adaptation of The Light Between Oceans plays at the Crystal Theatre at 4:45.

  • Reverend Shawna Foster, minister of the Two Rivers Unitarian Universalist congregation, hosts a community discussion about how to best support the water protectors at the Sacred Stone Camp in North Dakota. The event is open to the public today at 5:30 at the Third Street Center.

  • Marble Distilling hosts Comedy Night from 7 to 9. Comedian Nathan Lund is a touring veteran who hosts a weekly showcase in Denver called Too Much Fun! Opening for Nathan is Steve Vanderploeg, who was recently featured at the High Plains Comedy Festival.

  • The film adaptation of Queen of Katwe plays at the Crystal Theatre at 7:30.

  • Dance Initiative presents HEaRD, featuring original choreography by Alya Howe at the Launchpad at 7:30. The performance features local dance artists with spoken word elements.

  • Aspen 440 play Heather’s in Basalt at 7:30.

  • And Shakedown Street play Belly Up Aspen at 9:30.

Gavin became one of the youngest station managers in public radio on February 1, 2017. He is a writer and producer with a passion for community media. Prior to starting at KDNK as news director in 2016, Gavin worked for national radio programs Alternative Radio with David Barsamian and Nonprofit Radio with Tony Martignetti along with local stations KGNU Boulder, KYRS Spokane, KRBX Boise, KAOS Olympia, and Air America Radio affiliate KPTK Seattle. His nonprofit management experience includes Open Media Foundation, where he led a government transparency team, and Common Frequency, where his policy advocacy supported dozens of noncommercial radio startups. Boulder Weekly, Raw Story, Austin American-Statesman, Boise Weekly, and The Sopris Sun have published his reporting. His TV credits include directing teams at Colorado Channel, crewing for Democracy Now!, and hosting on Free Speech TV. He graduated from the Evergreen State College in 2008 with a BA in media production and community organizing.
