Avalanches unreported in Aspen area

Two of the four avalanche deaths in Colorado this winter were caused by slides in Pitkin County, and the county has led the nation in avalanche deaths over the last 60 years. Despite that tragic record, though, skiers here participate less in the state avalanche forecasting system than those in many other parts of the state. KDNK's Nelson Harvey set out to figure out why.

Sequestration, part two

The new deadline for sequestration is rapidly approaching, and President Obama is expected to talk about the across-the-board budget cuts as part of his State of the Union address.

If enacted, broad cuts will reduce the budgets of federal programs and agencies including a 6% cut to the defense budget, and similar cuts to the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service budgets.

In advance of Tuesday's State of the Union, KDNK's Eric Skalac spoke to the Natural Resource Defense Council's Franz Matzner to get an idea of what could be in store for the Roaring Fork Valley.

USA Pro Cycling Challenge rides into Aspen today

Organizers of the USA Pro Cycling Challenge have predicted the event could draw up to a million spectators at stages from Gunnison to Steamboat Springs. Enthusiasm for the race and the sport of cycling appears to be at an all-time high in Colorado - but it's already looking like those predictions about crowd sizes may be a bit optimistic. Even so, some of the mountain communities along the race route are happy for any economic boost. Reporter Kirk Siegler of Rocky Mountain Community Radio Station KUNC has more.

Thousands gather for USA Pro Cycling Challenge

Thousands of fans and more than one hundred professional cyclists were in Colorado Springs yesterday to kick off the seven-day USA Pro Cycling Challenge. This inaugural race will be televised across the world and is being plugged as an economic engine for the Colorado cities in its path. South American ski trip takes to the screen

The 5Point Film Festival is this weekend, and that means dozens of filmmakers from all over the world will be screening their films at Carbondale's Rec Center. Many of the films focus on outdoor sports, Nick Waggoner's ski movies focus less on impressive tricks and stunts and more on the location. Waggoner is showing a short preview of his upcoming film 'Solitaire' on Friday. He spoke with KDNK's Mathew Katz about the films unique take on South American skiing.
