Western Slope Food Bank of the Rockies was our Nonprofit Spotlight on Monday evening. The nonprofit distributed more than 5 million meals last year across 10 western Colorado counties. Their mobile pantry in Aspen will be distributing food in the parking lot of the U.S. Forest Service Ranger Station on Thursday September 15th starting at 11AM. Starlene Collins, manager of Western Slope Food Bank of the Rockies says, "Public radio is so important, because people want to help. By connecting with public radio and the service that you provide, and the information that you provide, people find out where to not only give help, but they also find out ways to get help."

Sep 12, 2016

The KDNK Board of Directors will hold its next meeting Monday, September 19, at 5:30 p.m. at the offices of KDNK 76 S. 2nd street in Carbondale. The meeting is open to the public. An agenda is posted at the KDNK office or click here or call 963-0139.

The KDNK news department hosted a special Journalist Roundtable live broadcast on Sunday September 11th. Our guests in the studio were Brent Gardner-Smith from Aspen Journalism, Lynn Burton from The Sopris Sun and Ryan Hoffman from the Rifle Citizen-Telegram and the Post-Independent. We talked about the challenges we face in meeting the information needs of the valley, including a lack of Spanish speakers in our newsrooms, and a simple lack of funding and time to do investigative reporting. And we talked about the stories that need more coverage, for example we cover drug crime but rarely discuss treatment. Thanks again to our guests!

Mountain Valley Developmental Services is an institution in the Roaring Fork Valley, employing over 150 people and advocating independent living for folks with developmental disabilities. Executive Director Bruce Christensen and HR Manager Courtney Little spoke to Stacy Stein from the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program on this morning's Nonprofit Spotlight. Bruce says, "I'm a huge fan of public radio. It's important to support KDNK. You guys do a fabulous job of keeping the community informed. I don't think that's something we get as much of from commercial media. I like your context and your perspective. KDNK is a wonderful resource."

Grace Lunsford and her husband Corbett are in Carbondale today at the Rec Center from 11AM - 4PM on a nationwide Proof is Possible Tour, traveling in a high performance tiny house on wheels they call #TinyLab. They are a High Performance Power Couple, educating the public on home performance and energy efficiency. KDNK news director Gavin Dahl spoke with Grace Lunsford about why they do what they do.

We will talk about the night skies and anything else that fascinates and inspires David. Geekspeak is hosted by Louie Girardot, Matt McBrayer and Steve Skinner.

Jodie Wilson, president of LiftUp's Board of Directors, talks to KDNK's Amy Hadden Marsh about the non-profit's successful 34 years of giving to the community.

Indigenous Environmental Network organizer Kandi Mossett is the featured speaker on Thursday's show, which was originally aired on Spirit Resistance LPFM Radio on Standing Rock treaty lands in North Dakota on 9/3/2016.

On this week’s news brief we look at the race to represent our valley in the U.S. Congress. Colorado Independent reporter Marianne Goodland has been a reporter at the Colorado state capitol for 18 out of the last 19 sessions. Her article is called Schwartz v Tipton: The Battle for Colorado's Third Congressional District.
